Drug School Program
Charged with a drug case? Looking for a way to avoid a conviction and a permanent scare on your record? In Illinois possession of any amount of cocaine, heroin or methamphetamine will be charged as a felony. If the amount is less than 15 grams then it will be a Class 4 felony offense that is punishable by probation and up to three years in prison. One of the ways to avoid probation or prison is to take part in a drug school program. Chicago criminal defense lawyer Michael Schmiege can assist you with this program.
Cook State’s Attorney Drug School Program – Chicago Criminal Lawyer
One of the fundamental goals of the criminal justice system is to rehabilitate individuals who have violated the law so that they do not violate the law again. Research has shown that nonviolent drug offenders are in need of treatment and counseling and that incarceration does not provide that. This is where the State’s Attorney Drug School program comes into play. Upon approval of the prosecutor and individual will be accepted into the program where they will receive between ten and twenty hours of counseling and education concerning the dangers involved with the use of drugs. If the individual successfully completes the program then the State’s Attorney’s Office will dismiss the pending drug charge against the individual who can then have it expunged from their record. It is important to note that only first time, non-violent offenders are eligible for entry in this program.
