Julian Assange, the founder of the controversial site "WikiLeaks" has been arrested by the British police. He was sent to jail without the possibility of bail while he awaits probably extradition to Sweden, where he has been accused of multiple sex offenses, including
rape and sexual assault. He has publicly stated that he is not guilty of the crimes, which he believes are part of an elaborate smear campaign against him and the legitimacy of WikiLeaks. He is fighting extradition.
WikiLeaks is a website that is dedicated to transparency in government and in business, and it has reported many internal documents that have caused an uproar in the international community. The site has exploded in the news recently as it released classified information pertaining to the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, as well as a flood of documents from U.S. embassies around the world.
If he is convicted of the crimes in Sweden, he will likely be sentenced to prison for a period of time. The site has continued to operate despite his arrest.
