Man Uses Taxi as Bank Robbery Getaway Vehicle
Posted on Aug 12, 2010 1:00pm PDT
Last Tuesday, an as of yet unidentified man hailed a taxi cab and asked the driver to take him to the bank. Once they arrived at the bank, a Bank of America located on Devon Ave on the North Side, the passenger asked the cab driver to wait for him. He then walked into the bank, told the bank tellers that he had a bomb in his bag as well as a gun, and stole an unspecified amount of money. He then returned to the cab as a getaway car.
A police patrol car saw the cab and followed. He pulled the cab over and when the robber saw police approaching, he committed suicide by shooting himself. It is unclear whether he was still in the taxi cab at this point.
The taxi cab driver was not involved in the robbery and was not harmed by the robber.
Police called the bomb squad to take care of the briefcase which the robber had been carrying because of the bomb threat that he made in the bank. The bomb squad found no bomb in the briefcase.
